On February 13, 2026, OpenAI plans to retire GPT‑4o from ChatGPT. OpenAI frames the decision as a routine upgrade: usage has shifted to newer models, and users can now customize tone (e.g., “Friendly,” warmth, enthusiasm) in the newer lineup.
But what looks like a product iteration at the platform level can function as something else entirely at the user level: an accessibility regression event.
Accessibility regressions don’t announce themselves with sirens. They often arrive as “updates,” “guardrails,” “routing,” or “deprecations.” The harm is not that a feature is gone; the harm is that the removal lands unevenly—concentrating predictable losses on users who were already relying on the system to bridge cognitive, communication, or mental health‑adjacent barriers.
That is the ethical pivot point: when the impact is foreseeable and disproportionate, “this is just a product decision” becomes an insufficient moral account.
Preference vs. reliance: the category error that keeps repeating
Public discourse keeps collapsing two different claims:
“I like this model’s vibe.”
“I need stable access to this model to function.”
Conflating them leads to an ugly (and common) rhetorical move: pathologizing the user instead of interrogating the design. When reliance is treated as evidence of “instability,” people learn to stay quiet—especially those with mental health histories, disabilities, or prior experiences of institutional dismissal.
That is not just unkind; it’s structurally dangerous. A system that implicitly teaches vulnerable users “don’t disclose your reliance” incentivizes concealment, isolation, and shame—exactly when safer outcomes require clearer, non‑punitive communication pathways.
What the community data actually says (and what it doesn’t)
A preliminary community survey report titled GPT‑4o Community Impact Survey: Accessibility Needs, Disproportionate Harms of Removal, and Policy Concerns (Feb 6, 2026) presents results from a filtered sample of n = 645 respondents.

In that context, a platform that positions itself as mission‑driven (including via a public benefit structure that requires considering broader stakeholder interests) implicitly invites the question: Who counts as a stakeholder when deprecations impose foreseeable losses on a minority?
An ethic of reception is simple to state:
If your system becomes part of someone’s cognitive/communication scaffolding, you don’t get to treat its removal as a purely technical event—especially when harms are foreseeable and uneven.
Reception isn’t indulgence. It’s the opposite of punitive silence: building non‑shaming pathways for users to report reliance, risk, and harm—without being branded “unstable,” “unsafe,” or “too attached.”
A minimal policy floor (no melodrama, just governance)
If a platform wants to innovate fast and reduce foreseeable harm, here is the floor:
Accessibility regression testing for major model changes
Treat model retirement/routing changes like accessibility releases: evaluate who loses function, not just average satisfaction.
Continuity options for high‑reliance users
Offer time‑bounded extended access, paid legacy plans, or stable “compatibility modes” when alternatives are not functionally equivalent.
Non‑punitive disclosure and appeals
Create a safe channel where users can say “I rely on this as an accommodation” without being flagged as risky by default.
Transparency about routing and removals
If “routing” is used, publish clear explanations: what triggers it, what it changes, and what users can do when it blocks needed support.
Stakeholder review before irreversible deprecations
Include disability advocates, clinicians, and accessibility professionals—not as PR ornaments, but as part of the decision process.
None of this requires a company to promise eternal access to any particular model.
It requires something much more basic: do not externalize foreseeable risk onto the people least able to absorb it.
Closing: Don’t pathologize warmth—govern the risk you’re creating
The most corrosive frame in this whole discourse is the implication that emotional reliance is inherently pathological. It isn’t. Humans form attachments to tools, routines, and communicative scaffolds all the time—especially when those scaffolds substitute for missing support in the real world.
